I originally started pole fitness in 2008 after a friend attended a few classes and told me how much fun it was.  Having been a gymnast as a child I took to the pole straight away looking at it as another form of gymnastic apparatus, and I was soon addicted!

I started attending classes at Spin City Exeter in late 2010; a few months later I was invited to train as a Spin City Exeter Instructor. I qualified as a Pole Dance Community approved instructor in 2011, and in 2014 I took over the running of Spin City Exeter with Krissy Salmon, and I have not looked back!  My favourite thing about teaching is helping students master moves that I know they have been struggling with, and seeing their sense of achievement.  I enjoy knowing that I have been able to help students reach their goals in a safe environment.

I am always looking to progress and improve my pole skills by attending masterclasses with a variety of professional instructors and by attending pole jams at other pole schools around the country.  My current aim is to improve my flexibility so that I will be able to master some of the more advanced moves that I have been working on. The best thing about pole is that the possibilities are endless; there is always room for improvement and something new to learn – who knew exercising could be so much fun?!

After attending nearly every lesson at Spin City Exeter since 2011, I was given the opportunity to train to become an instructor and to share my love and enthusiasm for the sport with our students. In 2014 I joined Karenza in taking over the running of Spin City Exeter with the aim of making it even bigger and better!

I am a perfect example of a student with no dance or gymnastic background, and I firmly believe that if you come to a class with a positive attitude and want to have fun whilst exercising, then pole is for you too.

I had my first lesson at Spin City Exeter in 2011 and pole fitness has been a part of my life ever since.  In 2013 I started my instructor training and qualified to teach beginner and intermediate pole in 2014, and I was invited to join Spin City Exeter instructor team soon after.  It is a fantastic privilege to be able to help students achieve their goals and more!

Pole fitness is an amazing, fun way to keep fit and active, and you make some wonderful friends along the way.  Being a late starter to pole myself, it's great to see that age is no barrier when it comes to pole!

I started pole dancing in 2012 at Spin City, Exeter's largest pole school.

Pole dance was something which I did not associate with fitness activities accessible to the general public. On seeing an advert for a special offer for pole fitness lessons, I immediately signed myself up, despite the nearly 50 mile round trip to classes. I was immediately hooked by the strength and grace of my teachers and promised myself that I would practice so that one day I might be a passable pole dancer.

My first lessons were physically extremely difficult for me as I lacked upper body strength and co-ordination, however I immediately felt the benefit of challenging myself to learn a new skill and being welcomed by a whole new community. I quickly made new friends and my twice weekly trips to Exeter were regular highlights in my weekly schedule. By applying myself with dedication in lessons and cross training to improve my strength and cardiovascular fitness, I quickly improved.

Fast forward 4 years and I am now a qualified instructor through the Spin City Instructor Training programme at both beginner and intermediate level. I am also registered with the Pole Dance Community as an approved three star instructor. I absolutely love this role and seeing students improve with my tuition. Anyone is capable of being a competent pole dancer and I have taught students of most ages, shapes and sizes.

Whilst the fitness and tricks aspects of pole are still a major interest for me, my focus has now shifted somewhat to dance and flow. I personally find the dance aspect of pole to be incredibly healing and fulfilling. Further, I really appreciate the opportunity for self- expression which pole dance has granted me.

KELLY KNIGHT

I became hooked on pole fitness after attending my first ever class at Spin City Exeter in 2013.  I have attended every class I possibly could ever since and it is often joked that I should set up a camp bed in the studio as I spend more time there than I do at home! I was invited to join the Spin City Exeter instructor team in 2016, and after starting my instructor training immediately I qualified as a Spin City instructor in February 2017. It is an honour and privilege to join such a wonderful pole family.

When I started pole I had no upper body strength, no coordination, and had no dance or gymnastics background, but with determination and support from the Spin City Exeter team I am where I am today: stronger and more confident than I have ever been! Pole is an addiction and I have adapted all of my non pole training to help me become even stronger and fitter, in order to progress and develop as both a pole dancer and now a pole instructor.  I aim to use my experience to help my students progress in their own pole journeys.

CARYS DAVIES

I first attended Spin City Exeter in 2011 looking for a new creative fitness challenge after spending my teens in contemporary dance companies. I immediately got the buzz and completely fell in love with pole and the inclusive, supportive feel of every lesson. My confidence grew and I worked my way up through the levels, attending workshops and masterclasses.

In addition to pole, yoga has also been a big part of my life and I have practiced it for a number of years. I have found that my yoga practice has played a huge part in my pole progression - they complement each other by improving flexibility, strength and stamina.

In January 2017 I took the opportunity to deepen my knowledge and practice, and trained to become a yoga instructor, learning from the source with a month long course in India (Himalaya Yoga Valley). Following this I was invited to join the Spin City Exeter instructor team, and I am now able to support others in the same way that I was at the start of my Spin City Exeter journey a few years ago.

I look forward to sharing what I have learnt with you, and helping you on your yoga and pole adventures!
